Preventive Dentistry

Your oral health is about much more than just your teeth. A healthy mouth plays a critical role in your overall well-being, and preventive dentistry is the foundation on which that health is built. At our practice, we believe the best dental treatment is the kind you never need — and that starts with regular, proactive care.

Preventive dentistry encompasses all of the services and habits that help you avoid more serious dental problems down the road. From the moment you walk through our doors, our goal is to help you maintain a strong, healthy smile at every stage of life — whether you’re bringing in your child for their first cleaning or you’re keeping up with your own long-term oral health routine. We employ 5 registered dental hygienists that makes family scheduling easy.

Routine Cleanings and Examinations

One of the most important things you can do for your dental health is show up for your regular cleanings and check-ups. We recommend most patients visit us twice a year, though some patients with gum disease or other conditions may benefit from more frequent visits.

During a professional cleaning, our hygienist will carefully remove plaque and tartar buildup that can’t be eliminated through brushing and flossing alone. Even the most diligent brushers miss spots, and over time, plaque hardens into tartar that can only be removed with professional tools. Left untreated, this buildup can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and eventual tooth loss.

After your cleaning, your dentist will perform a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and oral tissues. We check for early signs of cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and other conditions that are far easier — and less expensive — to treat when caught early. We may also take X-rays to get a complete picture of what’s happening beneath the surface.

Periodontal Maintenance

For patients who have been diagnosed with gum disease, standard cleanings may not be enough. Periodontal maintenance visits are a specialized form of cleaning that goes deeper — below the gumline — to remove bacteria and buildup from the pockets that form between your teeth and gums.

These visits are typically scheduled more frequently than standard cleanings, often every three to four months, and are a critical part of managing gum disease and preventing it from progressing. Consistent periodontal maintenance helps protect not only your gum tissue but also the bone structure that supports your teeth.

Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy

When gum disease has progressed beyond what a standard cleaning can address, non-surgical periodontal therapy — often called scaling and root planing — is one of the most effective ways to restore gum health without resorting to surgery.

During this procedure, our hygienist carefully cleans below the gumline to remove plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the tooth roots. The root surfaces are then smoothed to help the gum tissue reattach and heal. This treatment is typically done in sections, treating one area of the mouth at a time, and local anesthetic is used to keep you comfortable throughout.

For many patients, scaling and root planing is enough to bring gum disease under control. Following the treatment, consistent periodontal maintenance visits are important to keep the condition from returning.

Sealants

The back teeth — your molars and premolars — have deep grooves and pits on their chewing surfaces that can be difficult to clean thoroughly, even with careful brushing. These grooves are a common place for decay to start, especially in children and teenagers who are still developing their oral hygiene routines.

Dental sealants are a thin, protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth that essentially fills in those grooves and creates a smooth surface that’s much easier to keep clean. The application is quick, painless, and entirely non-invasive. Sealants can last for several years and serve as a reliable barrier against cavities in the areas most prone to decay.

We often recommend sealants for children as soon as their permanent molars come in, but adults who are at higher risk for cavities in those areas can benefit from sealants as well.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and makes teeth more resistant to the acids produced by bacteria in your mouth. It’s one of the most well-studied and effective tools in preventive dentistry, and it’s a routine part of our care for patients of all ages.

During your cleaning visit, we apply a fluoride treatment — typically in the form of a gel, foam, or varnish — directly to your teeth. The process takes just a few minutes, and the fluoride continues to work after you leave the office, helping to remineralize any early areas of enamel erosion before they become cavities.

Fluoride is particularly beneficial for children whose teeth are still developing, but adults can benefit as well, especially those who are prone to cavities, have dry mouth, or drink mostly bottled water that may not be fluoridated.

Whitening

While teeth whitening is often thought of as a cosmetic service, it fits naturally into a preventive mindset — when patients feel good about the appearance of their smile, they’re more motivated to take care of it. We offer professional whitening options that deliver results far beyond what over-the-counter products can provide.

Our whitening treatments use prescription-level whitening agents that are more effective and faster-acting than store-bought strips or gels. We can provide in-office whitening for dramatic results in a single visit, or we can create custom take-home trays that allow you to whiten at your own pace with a professional-grade gel. Either way, you can expect noticeably brighter results and the peace of mind that comes with doing it under professional supervision.

Laser Bacterial Reduction

As part of our commitment to staying current with dental technology, we offer laser bacterial reduction as an adjunct to your routine cleaning. This treatment uses a dental laser to target and eliminate harmful bacteria in the gum pockets around your teeth — bacteria that contribute to gum disease and can be difficult to remove through mechanical cleaning alone.

The procedure is quick, painless, and non-invasive, and it can significantly reduce the bacterial load in your mouth, supporting healthier gums and a cleaner oral environment overall. Laser bacterial reduction is particularly beneficial for patients who are prone to gum disease or who are in the early stages of periodontal disease.
